Reflexology is a very powerful ancient Chinese medicine that believes the qi or ‘vital energy’ flows through each person and when a person feels stressed, their body blocks qi (energy flow) which causes an imbalance that leads to illness. Reflexology aims to keep the qi flowing through the body, keeping it balanced and disease free.
This ancient art of applying pressure to the feet and hands using specific thumb, finger and hand techniques is based on a system of ten ‘zones’ and ‘reflex areas’, that reflect a map of the body on the feet and hands which allows access to every body part in a particular zone. Its function is to affect a physical healing and changes to homeostasis by releasing ‘blockages’ and restoring the qi (free flow of energy) through the body.
What are the benefits of Reflexology?
It is proven that a Reflexologist’s touch may help to calm the central nervous system, promoting relaxation and other benefits just like any form of massage.
In the 1890s, British scientists found that nerves connect the skin and internal organs. They also found that the body’s entire nervous system tends to adjust to outside factors, including touch. There is also a belief that the brain creates pain as a subjective experience. Sometimes, the brain reacts to physical pain. But in other cases, it may create pain in response to emotional or mental distress.
Thus, Reflexology is linked to many potential benefits and the research has shown the specific techniques of reflexology to be effective and beneficial in many ways;
· It activates ‘self-healing’ in the body by bringing the body into homeostasis (balance). In order for the body to maintain ‘homeostasis’, it needs energy in the form of oxygen and nutrients, which are circulated in the blood. Reflexology increases blood circulation, it increases the efficiency of cells and therefore organs and helps to clear blocked qi (energy flow).
· Relieves stress, anxiety and depression (75% of disease is thought to be stress related).
· It lifts the mood and creates a deep sense of relaxation and well-being.
· Boosts the immune system – helping to fight colds, bacterial infections and clear up sinus issues.
· Improves digestion
· Helps to improve the elimination of waste material, which can be harmful to the body if it accumulates.
· Helps to correct hormonal imbalances / boosts fertility
· Helps to prelease trapped nervous energy and improves neural pathways – somewhere in the region of 7000 nerves are stimulated through reflexology massage.
· Pain Reduction - relieving the symptoms of aches and pains associated with symptoms such as back pain, arthritis and headaches.
· Aids post-operative recovery: Reflexology work aids recovery after surgery as shown by several studies, reducing pain and lessening the use of post-operative analgesics.
· Complements cancer care: Pain, nausea, vomiting, and/or anxiety eased for chemotherapy patients following reflexology work as shown by 16 studies from 7 countries. It also treats the nerve problems and numbness from cancer drugs (peripheral neuropathy)
· Eases pregnancy, delivery and post-partum effects: Women who received reflexology experienced shorter labour times and used less analgesia. In addition, reflexology showed a positive impact on postpartum depression, anxiety, urination and bowel movements
What is the difference between Vodder and Brazilian MLD? The main difference between the two methods lies in their approach and purpose. Vodder MLD is a clinical treatment that focuses on the manual stimulation of the lymph nodes, combining slow, circular, and scoop-like motions to move the lymphatic fluid towards the larger lymphatic vessels for proper drainage and filtration. Vodder MLD is commonly used to treat conditions such as lymphedema.
Brazilian MLD is primarily designed for cosmetic purposes and is performed to enhance the appearance of the skin and reduce water retention in the body. This technique emphasis’s vigorous hand movements and pressure on the skin, stimulating the lymphatic system to reduce the appearance of cellulite, sculpt the body, firm the skin, and promote post op healing and care.
What happens in manual lymphatic drainage?
The therapist uses their hands to gently move the skin and stimulate lymphatic flow with techniques that can include rhythmic cupping stroking and soft circular movements. All the methods are gentle, so treatment is relaxing pleasant and pain free.
What is the lymphatic system functions;
· Drains
· Filters blood
· Filters the lymph
· Remove toxins
· Fights infection
· Absorbs fat
How does manual lymphatic drainage work?
Just beneath the surface of our skin is a network of tiny lymphatic vessels draining fluid lymph into deeper channels throughout the whole body from the top of the head to the tips of our toes. Unlike the circulation of blood there is no organ (heart) to force the fluid along vessels. Instead, lymph is dependent on the muscular contraction to squeeze fluid on its way.
However, when the system is damaged or not correctly formed this fluid becomes trapped in the tissues creating a traffic jam of protein rich lymph fluid sometimes it becomes so congestive that the swollen area feels hard and tender and skin may become pink. These blockages can sometimes be dispersed with Lymphatic Drainage.
Hand movements over the skin gently stretch the skin surface in a specific direction and this encourages lymph fluid to be pushed along tiny lymphatic channels away from the swelling and towards a different set of lymph nodes. In this way fluid is taken up by vessels and nodes that are working well without causing swelling elsewhere.
In effect Lymphatic Drainage creates a bypass around the damaged or ineffective vessels.
The body contains about 50% more lymphatic fluid than blood and most chronic disease problems occur at the junctions of lymph vessels and Primary release of accumulated lymph occurs in;
Women – axillary nodes
Men – inguinal nodes
Things that will slow the lymphatic system,
· Fighting off an infection bacterial or viral
· Primary and secondary lymphoedema
· Surgery
· Traumatic event
· Pregnancy
· Lifestyle
Sedentary vs active lifestyle
· The lymphatic system relies on muscle movement for lymph flow so the less muscle movement the slower the system.
· Sitting for long periods of time causes muscle stiffness and impedes the thoracic duct
· Standing one place for long periods of time will cause fluid to pool in the lower extremities.
The Main Benefits of Lymphatic Drainage
Improved immune system;
The immune system relies on the lymphatic system. In fact, if the flow of lymphatic materials slows the immune system weakens. Lymph drainage can improve the function and increase the production of antibodies that fight off infections as well as reduce systemic inflammation.
Relaxation
Lymphatic drainage is especially relaxing because it's slow, methodical rhythm, pressure and repetitive motion allows for the brain to relax and illicit the parasympathetic nervous system to slow heart rate and calm the system, increase glandular activity, reduce pain and promote general vitality and well-being.
Decongestive effect
Any swelling of the body except for cardiac or renal edema can be treated with Lymphatic drainage. The lymphatic system is a ‘one-way street’ to transport cellular waste from tissue and dispose back into the circulatory.
Healing after Surgery – speeds up recovery;
Speeds up surgery recovery - Manual lymph drainage can help with healing after surgery this technique assists in regeneration of cellular tissues to reduce scarring, swelling and prevent formation of fibrosis post op, detoxification of the body.
Other benefits;
· Stimulates the lymphatic system to remove toxins.
· Helps to regenerate cells by bringing nutrients and oxygen to them.
· Helps with hormonal imbalance.
· Calms and relaxes the central nervous system.
· Clears blocked energy channels.
· Relaxes eye muscle fatigue due to strain, poor vision, bad lighting and glasses.
· Clears upper and lower sinus cavities to improve breathing.
· Helps with Constipation
· Decreases excess fluid retention and inflammation
· Accelerates cellular metabolism for collagen and elastin synthesis, rehydrates the skin.
· Reduces the appearance of Cellulite.
· Reduces puffiness.
· Contours the body – (Brazilian Lymphatic)
Some conditions that have been proven to benefit from Lymphatic Drainage;
· Lymphedema

· Chronic sinusitis
· Stroke
· Head injury/ concussions
· Parkinson's disease
· Alzheimer's disease.
· Burns
· Fractures
· Sweating during pregnancy

This treatment is done using various Lymphatic Techniques specifically for the face which helps to detoxify and tone the skin of the face leaving an uplifted and glowing appearance with an added bonus of total relaxation!
This treatment can also be adjusted to treat TMJ Syndrome.
Gua Sha is a traditional Chinese healing technique that dates back over 2000 years the word ‘Gua’ means to scrape or rub, while ‘Sha’ describes the petechiae (red spots) that appear on the skin as a result of the treatment. When these spots appear, it is said that Sha has been released from the body. Gua Sha is used to treat a variety of issues including pain relief, fatigue, detoxification and stress reduction. It incorporates techniques to the face and neck such as Acupressure, Massage, Lymphatic Drainage and Myofascial Release.
Why Gua Sha?
As we age our skin inevitably loses some of its elasticity and moisture due to the decreased production of collagens, elasticity and hyaluronic acid so we may notice more wrinkles, fine lines, age spots, dry, dull and sagging skin.
The idea with Gua Sha facial is either to prevent or support changes in the blood flow in the muscles and tissues of your facial area. If the muscles in your face do not have a constant flow of this oxygen nutrient rich blood they will wither over time.
Benefits of Gua Sha facial massage;
The Gua sha face massage is an advanced completely natural facial treatment that follows the same principles of ancient Chinese facial acupuncture medicine however this method replaces the use of intradermal needles with Gua Sha tools triggering essential points and channels on the face and aiming to achieve similar if not the same benefits as the facial acupuncture such as
· Facial complexion renewal
· Reduction of clogged pores
· Tighten the chin enhances the ability of the skin to absorb makeup products
· Reduce the effects of aging enhance the skin
· Can promote the growth of new skin cells
· Improved blood flow to the head and neck
· Improve lymphatic drainage
· Relieve muscular tensions
· Relieve physical and emotional stress
· Promote deep relaxation
· Help improve muscle tone
· Help relieve deep congestion in the face and head
· Relieve stress and anxiety
· Create a feeling of balance and well being
· Uplifting
· It can also help with treatment of TMJ Syndrome.
How does Gua Sha face massage work?
Gua Sha facial works by stimulating microcirculation and bringing fresh blood flow to the face which oxygenates and detoxifies cells. It also helps to break down stagnant cellular debris that can lead to puffiness and fine lines. The increased circulation also helps to plump up and smooth out wrinkles.
It is very important to remember that the face is part of your body and if you fixate on changing your face without acknowledging the influence the state of your whole body has over your face your changes are not going to last very long.
Other things that you can do to help your skin;
Healthy diet, getting enough sleep, regular exercise and avoiding toxins will help the skin cells from damage. Using skin care products that contain antioxidants and collagen/elastin to help restore the loss of volume and firmness and taking supplements that contain Hyaluronic acid.

Instruction of the techniques was handed down orally from generation to generation till it was subscribed on palm leaves and considered a sacred text.
What is Thai Massage?
Thai massage is an ancient and unique form of body therapy, incorporating deep stretching and rhythmic compression with hands and feet in a dance like transmission of energy. It is performed on a mat on the floor with the client remaining fully clothed and the practitioner uses body weight rather than muscular force to exert pressure creating a highly therapeutic effect. Thai massage combines the principles of acupressure whereby the Sen is stimulated, which is said to balance the energy system in the body.
The energy lines or Zen are reminiscent of the meridians of Chinese acupuncture. However, where the meridians follow the energy associated with specific organs, this then follows the form of the body. The Sen therefore may cross from 1 Meridian to another, in practice 10 meridians serve as the foundation. Pressure is exerted on these lines and points with the palms of the hands, the palms and in some cases the elbows and feet.Thai massage affects the entire body by increasing flexibility releasing both deep and superficial tension and helping the body's natural energy to flow more freely. The result is an opening of the body which leaves one feeling both relaxed and energised at the same time.
Benefits:·
Deep relaxation, pressure on feed and legs is sedating, sometimes inducing hypnotic or altered states of consciousness.
· Releases points of tension in the body which block the natural flow of energy, inducing homeostasis (balance and harmony), releases stress and increases energy.
· Increases flexibility and range of motion.
· Assists in alignment and postural integrity of the body.
· Improves circulation.· Strengthens the internal organs.
· Relieve pain.· Improves neurological functioning and assists in relieve degenerative conditions associated with the aging process.
· Promotes inner peace and a quiet mind.
People will vary in their response to Thai massage, depending the on how well the client is able to relax their body and mind in general. Some find a single treatment radically alters their perception of their own body and therefore their sense of self however, a tense rigid client may need more than one or two sessions to feel the same benefits or achieve the same result.
Massage has both Physical and Psychological effects to the body and can be an important part of your health maintenance plan such as Stress Management, Sports Training, Injury Prevention, Reducing or eliminating pain and muscular tension, improving Circulation and lymphatic drainage. It has also been said that one hour of full body massage is the equivalent of 8 hours good night sleep!
What is Swedish Massage?
The Swedish Massage is one of the most common and widely used massage types in the world and can be defined as the use of classic techniques to manipulate soft tissue for relaxation and holistic therapeutic purposes. The techniques used within Swedish massage are the four main techniques that make up the core of nearly all different massage therapies and are taught to every massage therapist when they begin and the pressure can be light to deep depending on the clients preference.
If you’re planning your first massage, a Swedish massage is a great place to start. The Swedish body massage uses a combination of different massage techniques implemented into a single session to relax and soothe away stress. Since a Swedish massage is not as intense as Sports remedial massage you can feel very calm, relaxed and rejuvenated afterwards.
If you feel overworked, stressed, or have tense muscles, a Swedish massage may be a great way to begin reviving your body and mind as this massage is well know for relieving muscle tension, aches and pains, decreasing muscles toxins, improving flexibility, improving circulation and increasing blood oxygenation so this therapy can be both relaxing and rejuvenating. This type of massage also increases serotonin and dopamine levels which may make you feel more emotionally balanced.
Physiologically your body is trying to get rid of toxins so you may feel tired and sleepy afterwards, so it is important to drink plenty of water to help with the elimination of the toxins.
What is Deep Tissue Massage?
Deep tissue massage in particular works deep in the muscles, realigning the muscle fibres and connective tissue, and flushing away the toxins. Regular sessions will increase joint mobility and flexibility and reduce the risk of injury during exercise and improve overall performance. In sports massage various techniques may be used alongside deep tissue massage to help alleviate pain and tension in the muscles.

Here is a more in-depth guide to how your body can benefit through the magic of the bodies systems that help to encourage the body back to Homeostasis through massage therapy.
The skeletal system: Bone is affected indirectly by massage. Improved circulation of blood brings oxygen and nutrients to the bones. Joint stiffness and pain can be reduced. As the muscles become more flexible, joint movement increases.
The muscular system: Some massage movements relax and stretch muscles, reducing muscular tension and cramp. Muscles tired by exercise are more quickly restored by massage than by rest.
The nervous system: Soothing massage can provide relief from nervous irritability and stress-related conditions such as insomnia and tension headaches. When used energetically to stimulate, massage may relieve lethargy and fatigue.
Circulation system: Massage can improve the flow of blood, which can help poor circulation. This is especially useful for anyone who is immobile.
Lymphatic system: Gentle massage stimulates the lymphatic system, which helps clear the body of a build-up of waste products. The relaxing effect of the massage can relieve stress, which in turn can boost the immune system.
Respiratory system: As you become more relaxed during a massage, respiration may become slower and deeper as you are using your diaphragm for breathing and expending less energy. Certain massage techniques can also help to relieve the muscles that have become tense from shortened breathing for example.
Digestive system: Massage aids relaxation and therefore can help to increase the movement of food and waste products through the digestive system. This relaxation can have a balancing effect on the digestive system, especially if the abdominal area is massaged and this can help with aiding the movement of waste through the colon.
Urinary system: Waste products that have been released during massage find their way via the blood to the kidneys where they may be filtered out and eliminated.
Female reproductive system: Menstrual problems such as period pains and PMS can be alleviated by the relaxing effects of massage, as can menopausal symptoms.
In a hot stone massage treatment smooth, flat basalt stones (a type of volcanic rock that retains heat) are placed on specific parts of your body and used to massage your body alongside Swedish massage techniques. This is deeply relaxing and rejuvenating.
